Few words from President
|
Continuously increasing energy consumption, a consequence of development and the contemporary way of life, has a major impact on the earth's environment and climate. For this reason, a global effort has started for the mitigation of this impact with the application of energy saving technologies and the rational use of energy. At the same time, the exploitation of environmentally friendly (and friendly to man) renewable energy sources are being promoted, thus making a crucial contribution to sustainable energy development.
Greece is participating in this global effort by formulating energy policies to implement the Kyoto Treaty and also contribute to the achievement of the targets set with the rest of the European countries for renewable energy sources. We are therefore developing the infrastructure, we are creating the initiatives and promoting the relevant technologies so that by 2010 the renewable energy sources may contribute up to 12% to the energy balance and 20% of electricity generation. As a consequence, the energy independence of our country will increase, as will the employment in industries manufacturing RES equipment for electricity generation that will be established in Greece.
CRES implements, with internationally recognised success, applied research projects and projects for the development of new technologies in the fields of rational use of energy, energy saving and renewable energy sources. The dissemination and promotion of technologies and the support for the implementation of energy investments in these sectors, that CRES provides make a crucial contribution to the formation of national energy policy. The goal of the centre's scientific staff is to establish CRES as the most important institute for the development, dissemination and establishment of new environmentally friendly energy technologies in our country and to be acknowledged internationally as one of the most important energy centres in its field.
