The general project idea of SINERGIA is to promote technology transfer to agro-food Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and to help them to approach energy innovation centers, in order to drive enterprises towards optimal innovative solutions based on criteria of optimizing energy use and associated costs in every segment of their productive chain. SINERGIA promotes the technology transfer to the agro-food SMEs in 7 Mediterranean regions by identifying, in some very representative agro-food clusters, innovative processes to address energy efficiency patterns and switch to renewable energy sources.

Objectives:
The general objective of SINERGIA is to promote the technology transfer to the SME's in the agro-food industry in order to:

  • Identify innovative processes to address energy efficiency patterns in the productive chain;
  • Guarantee a wide replication of the technological solutions for energy saving and CO2 reduction undertaken by the different agro-food divisions and productive clusters in the involved Mediterranean regions;
  • Strengthen the competitiveness of the agro-food industry in the Euro-Mediterranean and global markets, lining up the overall economic strategy of the Mediterranean agro-food sector with the sustainable use of the resources addressed by Europe's Growth Strategy to 2020.
SINERGIA identifies and groups key (pilot) productive agro-food sectors by following 2 basic parameters:
  • expression of the different territories (regions, provinces, productive clusters, etc.) and/or productive fields located in the different project regions and in the MED Program Area;
  • divisions demonstrating a tendency and high index of market penetration to technological innovation, making possible to successfully implement innovative technological solutions allowing high margins of improvement.
SINERGIA actions, which are performed in 7 specific MED pilot regions across 3-4 specific agro-food pilot sectors, have the following specific objectives:
  • Capitalization of the most relevant MED and Research projects tackling the innovation in agro-food sector (baseline) and zooming the critical factors related to the energy efficiency in the agro-food industry (including the market barriers in some of the major and key productive divisions in the Mediterranean agro-food industry);
  • Identification of innovative solutions (Decision Support Systems for simulations of major energy efficiency scenarios and Life Cycle Cost Analysis) that enable enterprises to reach higher energy performance standards and support them to take wisest investment choices;
  • Development of technological transfer actions at TRANSNATIONAL level, in order to stimulate investment policies based on lower energy inputs, better energy efficiency in the phases of transformation and processing of the product and in the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES);
  • Multiply, at local and productive cluster dimension, the SINERGIA E-efficiency cooperative model to a broader range of SMEs & stakeholders through the empowerment of existing eco-innovation help-desks in each project region, as well as through the promotion of Public and Private agreements to stimulate a shift towards low energy productivity models, the use of RES and synergies that exploit the best endogenous resources of the concerned territories.
