EUROPEAN PROJECTS SAVE Programme Eco-Driving Europe

Three instruments for energy efficient vehicle use-ECLAB”-“Subprogram 1: Building the frame for a European Market for EcoDriving

Project Duration 01/01/2004 – 31/12/2005
CRES Budget 50.620,00 €

The main objective of the economical, environmental and safe driving (Eco-Driving) is fuel saving, reduction of the environmental consequences and improvements in the safety of road transport. In brief, the benefits of Eco-Driving are:

  • 10-15% fuel savings and CO2 emissions
  • Significant decrease of air pollutants CO,H/C, NOx etc. and noise
  • 10-25% improvements in road safety
  • Decrease in fuel costs, vehicle maintenance and insurance costs
  • Increase in travel comfort for drivers and passengers
  • Improvement of the public opinion for public road means
  • Decrease of drivers’ stress
  • Equal travel time compared to the usual driving style

Greek Pilot Action: « Training urban bus drivers to promote a smart driving style (EcoDriving)»

The EcoDriving pilot action included the training of some urban bus drivers working in ETHEL (Thermal Bus Company of Athens) under the guidance of VtenL (Dutch Institute). Moreover electronic monitoring devices measuring fuel consumption, travel time etc.

Were installed in two specific bus lanes in order to evaluate fuel savings and the driving performance of the bus drivers before and after the Eco-Driving training procedure.

Main Results: 10% fuel savings during the EcoDriving training courses and 4,7% fuel savings during the whole pilot action when drivers were applying EcoDriving in real conditions. In a case of an integrated scheme with constant Eco-Driving training courses for all ETHEL bus drivers, the annual savings regarding fuel costs would be between 6,6 to 3 million Euros, depending on the implementation level and the effectiveness of the EcoDriving scheme. In addition, substantial savings would come from the reduction of the maintenance costs, the drivers' working stress relief and the improvement in the public profile of the company. Finally, the benefits from the decreaseof airborne emissions and noise would be very significant.
