Title: “Energy Wood Production Chains in Europe (ECHAINE)”

Funding Program: 5th Framework Programme

Duration: 01/10/2002 - 31/09/2005

Budget : Total € 427.400, CRES € 32.370

Project Description:

ECHAINE is providing a comprehensive and offering new insights into the current and future production of wood fuel and its conversion to energy in Europe.

The work comprises multi-dimensional analyses of diverse wood chains options – from economic, market, policy, environmental, technological and social perspectives. Information is being collected, analysed and represented in formats that can be easily understood and disseminated. The work will result in up-to-date and forward looking views of the use of indigenous energy resources with significant future roles in the diversification of energy supply and the mitigation of the impacts of environmental and climate changes.

The expected results of the ECHAINE project include:

A thorough review of modern wood energy production options, including:

- Production and delivery of wood fuels.
- Heat and power generation technologies.

Analysis of:

- The markets for wood energy and identification of market drivers as well as barriers.
- Institutional and socio-economic aspects.
- Wood energy policy, design and action.
- An interactive, on-line GIS tool.
